My role is to provide a path to get there.  In other words, I bring the tool box and we collaboratively figure out which tools to use and how to use them.  Any project will require tools to complete.  So which tools do we need?

A conversation I had recently with a client pushed me to take a look at the toolbox I carry with me and figure out which tools are required for any effort.  A few thoughts crossed my mind.  Do I have the right tools?  Do I have too many tools?  Am I offering the right tools for the project?

After reflecting on this idea for a while, I came to the conclusion that there are 3 tools needed to achieve success in any project we take on.  I am certainly not suggesting that these are the only tools you will need but these 3 tools are the ones you better take out of the toolbox before you even look at the blueprint.

You Can Only Get Here From There!

TOOL 1 – AWARENESS

When I speak to people and ask them about their goals, I get all kinds of responses. Some are simply the “one-liner conceptual type” and others are full of detail and very specific.  I love to follow this up with a question.  Where did you come up with that idea?  This is where it get’s interesting.  “I don’t know, I just think that would be real nice to achieve that.”  Or, “Well I want more than what I have now and that is more.”

Most people set their goals upon only that which they know.  They never even consider that there might be options that they have not even thought about.  That conversation I had allowed that person to enter into the awareness of possibility she had never thought about before.  All it took was a few curious questions she had never asked herself.

Stepping To The Line Of Intention Is Only The Beginning

TOOL 2 – INTENTIONALITY

Nothing happens without setting the intention for it.  Sure, life happens but I’m not talking about life happening to you, I’m talking about “intentionally” happening to life. Peter Drucker said; “The best way to predict the future is to create it.”  (Tweet This / Post to LinkedIn)

Drucker is spot on.  If you want to achieve anything of significance in life, you need to be intentional about it.  Do you think the Seattle Seahawk defense figured because they were the #1 rated defense this year, they could just show up to the Super Bowl and perform?  Not hardly.  I know enough about the game of football to know they were very intentional about everything that happened on the field in New Jersey on Sunday.

Who Are You When Someone Else “Is Watching?”

TOOL 3 – ACCOUNTABILITY

You need the awareness and you need to set the intention but without the tool of accountability you are simply rolling the dice on whether or not you will be successful.  I am not saying you can’t accomplish great things on your own but let’s be real.  If you could do it on your own, it would already be done and it wouldn’t be on your list anymore.  Make sense?

The simple fact is we perform better when someone else is watching.  If they are going to watch, they might as well call us out when we need it.  Quit fooling yourself by saying “this time will be different.”  The only way it will be different is if you make it different.

So I have a little different type of challenge for you today.  Think about these 3 tools and then think about someone that you know that carries these with them.  Go talk to that person and ask them how they use those tools to find success in their endeavors.  You never know, they just might make a pretty good accountability partner as well!

I have spent much of the past two or three years studying what separates those who succeed from those that don’t.  I have come to the conclusion that it comes down to not what they are trying to do, but why they are trying to doing it.

Back to my opening statement.  For me, that lingering item has been my health.  I have never been able to figure it out.  My wife Michelle sets a great example for me.  She eats good, sleeps 8+ hours a night and runs five days a week.  Beyond that, I want to be in good health.  Even though I am 48, I feel like I am younger than that but at the same time, feel time catching up – if you know what I mean!

A couple of friends of mine, Chemae and Eric, are Take Shape For Life coaches and after years of listening to stories about success they have been having with their clients, I decided to put some of the health principles that they teach to the test.

About six months ago, I started eating smaller meals and cut way back on sugar and carbs.  Boom!  Instant results.  By early November I had hit my first benchmark.  I had dropped twenty pounds and thought I had this health thing all figured out.  After all, I am a professional coach.  Should be easy, right?  Maybe not.

A month later and no more progress.  So I did what I should have done to begin with. Reached back to Eric and Chemae and said “Help!”  Three words made a huge difference.  Here they are and why they are so important.

STOP

When things are not going the way you want.  When you just aren’t getting the results you are looking for – STOP!  I didn’t say quit, I said stop.  I know you have heard the saying “If you keep doing what you’ve been doing, you’ll keep getting what you’ve been getting.”  So if this is the case – stop and take a minute to figure out why things are not working out.  How do you do this?  Simple …

CHALLENGE

If you are not getting the results you were looking for, challenge the thought process that you have been using to get them.  Challenge your why.  Most of all, challenge what you know about what you want and why you want it.  (Tweet This / Share on Facebook / Post to LinkedIn) Knowledge is power and sometimes even when our why is the right one – we don’t understand it enough to make it strong enough to provide the strength to succeed.  OK, then what?

CHOOSE

Now you are a little bit smarter.  Now choose a new path.  The destination might still be the same but now you can make the needed course corrections and get back after it. Life is about choices and usually, the better informed we are, the better choices we make.  Clarity also makes the decision making process much easier.  Eliminate the things that didn’t or won’t work and then you have less to choose from.

So does this work?  Well, one week into following the Take Shape For Life program and I was down 5 more pounds and getting more sleep.  In reality, the process impressed me so much that it struck me that this would be a great addition to be able to provide the same support and resources to my own clients.  Most of them have health related issues on their list anyway so why not add a plan that actually works into the services I provide.

One of the great things about being a coach is that you get to collaborate with other coaches and mentors on a regular basis.  Honestly, I think having a coach or mentor – someone to hold you accountable – is the best way to achieve any goal.  Speaking from personal experience I can say that my results increase dramatically when I have someone holding me accountable to doing what I say I am going to do.

One of my mentors, Kary Oberbrunner, recently posted this on his Day Job to Dream Job blog:

The purpose of your dream is not in achieving the dream itself, but rather the person you become in the process of achieving it.

I think I heard something like this before but it clearly did not stick.  This time it did.  I get this now.  It makes so much sense.  It’s really no different for goals.  When the goal is the goal, the focus is on the destination.  When the goal is about changing who you are, the goal becomes the bi-product of the transformation you go through.

I Don’t Want To Be What I Used To Be!

Maybe it’s the transformation that I have gone through over the past few years in my own life that has brought clarity to this concept.  But now that I understand it, everything I do has more meaning.  And not just to me, but to those around me as well.

In Guatemala last June, John Maxwell told me that; “Once you get a taste of significance, you will never settle for success.” (Tweet This / Share on Facebook / Post to LinkedIn)  Think about that one for a minute!

OK, so why does any of this matter?  If you remember from an earlier post, I mentioned that today in National Quit Day.  The average day that most people give up on their New Year’s Resolutions.  Do you possibly think that the reason they give up is because they are focused on the destination and let’s be honest, how much change can possibly take place in ten days?

I Want To Be Who I Am Going To Be!

OK – Problem identified.  Now let’s get to the solution.  Here is my advice.  The next time you set a goal, use the one you set ten days ago if you want, spend some additional time writing down (YES, I SAID WRITING DOWN) the person you hope to become in achieving that goal.

We are ten days into 2014 and I will go out on a limb here and assume that most of you have made some type of list of the things you want to achieve this year.  My guess is very few of you have written down who you would like to become this year.

I Can’t Find The Easy Button

Are you going to measure the success of this year by how well you achieve your goals? What if you fail?  What if life happens and you simply can’t attain your goals because of your circumstances?

Here is the good news about focusing on the journey instead of the destination. Setting out to change yourself does not really have much to do with achieving the goal. We can learn through adversity and we can change during the difficult times.  We can grow every day in any situation.  It doesn’t matter what life throws at us.

“That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” – Friedrich Nietzsche

Nietzsche may give the best goal setting advice there is.  The problem is that most people don’t get stronger.  They give up or simply change direction because “it makes more sense.”  

As far as I am concerned, this may be the most important question I ask this year. “Who do you want to become?”  How about a bonus question to celebrate National Quit Day?  “What will you do to become that person?”

The mind-set of a mentor leader is on the big picture.  Having clear vision on your mission will require a firm hold on your value system.  Strong values will empower a leader to creates strong people.  People are who make the difference.

THE MATURITY OF A MENTOR LEADER

“Your past has helped to set a course for what motivates, directs, and drives you, or what holds you back.”

• Mentor leaders deal with the past learning from the experiences.
• Mentor leaders forgive to allow freedom from the things that hold us back.

Mentor Leaders are not created overnight.  They understand where they are.  They understand how their previous decisions have impacted their current condition and they have a clear picture on where they want to go.  They are able to utilize all the resources they have and their life experiences to mentor others along the way.

No question today, but a challenge instead.  Find someone to mentor you and find someone you can mentor.  A life can be changed and it might just be yours!

The post The Mentor Leader – Part 1: Mandate, Mind-set and Maturity appeared first on BUILDING WHAT MATTERS.COM.

How is this done?  By simply asking questions.  But not just any questions – the right questions.  The coaching philosophy I was trained under suggests that the person being coached already has the answers within them and the “why” that drives them usually leads to the answer.  The problem is that often times, the right question is not being asked.

I have found that the better the question, the better the answer.  So why don’t we just ask better questions?  I believe it is because we have so much information stuffed in our head with no time to empty it, that it basically covers up the good questions.

I was on a walk in the woods this weekend trying to clear my head and ask some of these “good” questions.  Why?  Because I want good answers.  Remember how I said that our “why” is usually connected to those answers?  Well as I was walking through the woods I saw a tree (see picture) that just happened to look like a giant “Y”.

Then I asked one of those good questions.  “How could I use that Y as a reminder of my why?”  And guess what – I got a good answer.  Take a picture of it and set it as the background on my phone.  That way whenever my phone rings with another distraction from someone who is more concerned about their schedule than mine, I will be reminded that I have a why.

My why overrides all the other stuff that fills my day.  Now when the phone rings, I will be reminded that regardless of the distractions, I can remained focused on my why.

I guess by now you are probably wondering what my why is.  There is a hint in the url at the top of this page.  You see, my why is simply this … “Building What Matters.”  Now I suppose you want to know what matters.  PEOPLE MATTER!

I am clear on my vision and my purpose and thus I am clear on my why.  I find it very interesting how many people don’t know what their why is.  Maybe that’s why I enjoy coaching so much.  Helping people find their why is like figuring out a very difficult puzzle.

Asking good questions helps to solve the puzzle.  Some puzzles are more difficult than others but you still need to get enough of the pieces put together to see what the picture will look like.  I know what you are thinking … All you have to do is look at the box and you will see what the picture looks like.

Here comes the money line … Your life doesn’t come with a box, at least not one you can see.  The box is that thing inside your head called a brain.  That’s where the picture is.  Coaching helps put the picture together.

OK, that was fun.  Now what?  My suggestion … If you want to know your why, if you want to know what your life is supposed to look like, start asking better questions.

One of the definitions of OPUS is a “masterpiece.”  This masterpiece is a written document that describes what my life would look like at it’s finest. What I ended up with upon it’s completion was a road map to creating the life I was designed to live.

I now understand what I am passionate about and have complete clarity about making decisions that align with my purpose. The gray area that contributed to several mistakes in my life is now gone and I know what is important and how to protect it.

Oberbrunner suggests that Pain in our lives creates a barrier in reaching our Potential. For me, it was the pain of doing things wrong and dwelling on them instead of embracing them that was holding me back.  Now I understand that I can learn from my mistakes and use them as part of my story to help others.  I now have a new perspective on life.

I now realize that “Building What Matters” is the most important thing there is.  What matters is people.  This includes myself, my family and anyone else that I have to opportunity to add value to.

The concept of authoring your OPUS is understanding what each of the letters stand for.  This acrostic, originally developed by Chet Scott of Built to Lead goes like this:

OVERARCHING VISION

This is basically your big dream.  You know, that perfect picture of what life would look like in “your perfect world.”  If you were to write your “I have a dream speech” as Martin Luther King Jr. did several years ago, what would it say?  I believe you can turn your dreams to reality if you understand how to reach it and intentionally take the steps to achieve it.

PURPOSE

What is your purpose?  It amazes me how many people can’t answer that question.  I used to be one of them.  I once heard John Maxwell say that “the two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you discover why.”  I know you know when you were born, but have to yet to discover why?  Once you find the answer, you will be overwhelmed by the clarity that comes along with it.

UNIFYING STRATEGIES

These are the buckets that your life fits into, the buckets that you need to identify to achieve your overarching vision.  When you make decisions, do you know what bucket you are filling up?  Do you even know what your buckets are?  Knowing what your buckets are gives you the clarity to know whether those decisions are worthwhile or not.

SCORECARD FOR SIGNIFICANCE

This is the way you identify if you are working towards your dream or not.  If the way you are investing your time will result in return on your investment or not.  Are the choices you are making helping to reach your potential?  Your purpose?  Your dream?

I can’t really do justice in a simple blog post to describe what authoring my OPUS has done for me and I have tried to summarize hours of thought and reflection into 500 words.  The good news is that you have a great opportunity to find out more about this journey and how to author your own OPUS.

The post Looking For Clarity? Maybe It’s Time To Author Your OPUS appeared first on BUILDING WHAT MATTERS.COM.

It does not matter how successful you are and in what area, there is always potential to do even more and achieve new levels of success.  It has been said that you will become the product of the five people you spend the most time with and the books you read.  That being said, you may already have the answer to the question of who your role models are.

So now comes the time to evaluate whether or not these “role models” are going to take you to the next level.  Are these people going to help you grow in a positive way or are they going to hold you back, or even worse, pull you down?  This may be a difficult challenge.  There may be people in your life that are important to you but are doing nothing to help you reach your potential.

What you should really be looking for is one or more mentors.  Someone who is willing to both teach you and coach you towards a desired outcome and lead by example. John Maxwell in his book The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth gives us six things to consider when determining someone we should be following:

1.  A GOOD MENTOR IS A WORTHY EXAMPLE

Any role model you have or seek to have should be an example of what you desire to be.  That being said, remember we may want to be like someone but you need to be yourself.  There is a difference between being like someone and acting like someone.

2.  A GOOD MENTOR IS AVAILABLE

If you are reading someone’s book, this probably won’t apply.  If you are looking for a mentor, consider their availability.  This is going to be someone that you may want to schedule time with or need to make an occasional phone call when an issue comes up.

3.  A GOOD MENTOR HAS PROVEN EXPERIENCE

Does your mentor have a good track record performing the type of support you are looking for.  If someone has demonstrated positive results over an extended amount of time, chances are good that they will help you in your journey.

4.  A GOOD MENTOR POSSESSES WISDOM

Good decisions are key to successfully moving forward in any endeavor.  Wisdom typically comes from experience.  Has this person succeeded in the areas you want to improve?

5.  A GOOD MENTOR PROVIDES FRIENDSHIP AND SUPPORT

Chances are that if you are close to someone, you would consider them a friend.  Friends support and encourage each other.  Look for someone that you can connect with outside of a mentoring relationship.

6.  A GOOD MENTOR IS A COACH WHO MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN PEOPLE’S LIVES

Have the people you are looking up to helped other people?  Do they positively influence others in your community?  Look for someone that has helped other people move towards their potential.  There is no reason not to call other people that this person has worked with to see how they have influenced them.

Just like the law states, we can’t do it alone.  Whatever you are doing or attempting to do, someone else has done it before you and done it better.  A big part of personal growth is finding someone to help you along the way.  Choose carefully, that person just may change your life.

I commented that I had told one of my mastermind groups that I would occasionally “put on my coaches hat” during our meetings.  The more I study the art of coaching, the more I realize that coaching is a process that can help us in all forms of communication, whether structured or unstructured.

The backbone of the coaching process is that the answers to the questions already exist within the individual, they simply are not asking the right questions.  So I got to thinking “why can’t we steer our everyday conversations towards asking the right questions?”

Here are 5 keywords to consider when having everyday conversations:

1.  AWARENESS

How much are we aware of what is really being said in any conversation that we have?  I know I am often guilty of thinking more about my response than what is actually being spoken to me.  To be really aware in the conversation, you need to give total focus to the words being spoken to you and not on the words you are planning to respond with.

2.  ENGAGEMENT

Another conversational trap … are you really engaged with the person you are speaking with (notice I said with and not to)?  Making the conversation about the other person is the best way to become and remain engaged.  The minute our own thoughts and agenda take over we have disengaged.

3.  NON-JUDGEMENTAL

The other person has for whatever reason decided to share and confide in you.  Typically this is not done to promote some type of judgement in return.  Many times the words that are spoken are simply an effort to be heard.  No solution or instruction is needed, simply acknowledgement and affirmation.

4.  RESPONSIBILITY

I believe that we are all here to serve a greater purpose.  We have a responsibility to each other to be part of the solution and not part of the problem.  When actively participating in a conversation, our responsibility is to listen, not speak.  People, by nature, want to be heard.  They want to be validated and have their feelings and thoughts affirmed.  Don’t feel the need to fix every problem that comes across your table.  Remember the first principle of coaching … the answer is within the individual.

5.  PERMISSION

If you do have something to say that you feel may be constructive, ask permission to share it.  What’s wrong with simply asking “Can I tell you what I think?” or “Would you like to know how I feel about it?”  Sometimes the answer might be “No, I just needed to get that out of my system.”  Making the conversation about the other person can result in no need to say anything, simply listen and hear what is being said.

Self Leadership is a necessary tool in coaching.  But it’s more than that.  It is a tool that can be used in everything we do that involves communication.

The next time you get into a conversation, lead yourself to a point in which the question you ask is “How can I help the person I am talking to answer their own question?”  This is the way we develop others to become more self confident and independent.  That is true influence!

I was watching the Oregon Ducks play the Washington Huskies last night and one of the announcers commented the Oregon Coach Chip Kelly often asks “why can’t we do it that way.”  Chip Kelly is a guy that produces from his “outside the box” thinking.

It doesn’t matter if you are a fan of the Ducks or not, you can’t argue with the results they achieve on the football field.  Yes, he runs a fast paced, west coast offense that we have seen before in both the collegiate and professional levels, but he has taken it a step further.  He has added some very unique twists and turns to something that already has succeeded and made it better.

I believe that his success is not just from knowing the game but because he loves the game and is passionate about it.  Kelly wants to make it better.  Better for the fans, better for the coaches and most importantly, better for the players.

Kelly knows what the box is.  The box he thinks outside of is a game that is not only meant to entertain, but to develop.  When the Oregon Duck players finish their collegiate career and enter into the real world, I think they will have an advantage in the lessons they have learned under Kelly and will be more successful because of it.

One of my favorite quotes from Kelly:

“I saw the ‘Feel Sorry For Yourself’ train leaving the parking lot & none of our players were on it so that was a good sign.”

My takeaway from this piece of genius … his players understand that no matter what kind of coaching they receive, the final product is up to them – On or Off the field.  They know that there is no one responsible for their play on the field except themselves.  That in itself, is a pretty good lesson for succeeding in the real world.

I am a fan of Chip Kelly for the excitement his teams provide the state that I live in.  I am a bigger fan of Kelly because of the leaders he is developing.

Anyone who has followed the Oregon Duck football program knows that there have been some black marks and the programs integrity has been questioned.  I am not here to put anyone on a pedestal or judge their actions.  We all have made mistakes and done things that we wish we could take back.

I have coaches, mentors and accountability partners.  I also am involved in multiple mastermind groups, facilitating some and participating in others.  I know what you are thinking … what is wrong with this guy, he must really need help.

While not totally disputing that, I am doing it because I want to get better.  Not only better as a coach, but better as a person in general.  You will always accomplish more when working with another person or in a group.  You only have your perspective and trust me, you don’t know half as much as you think you do.  I don’t either!

I recently heard a list of coaching principles from one of my mentors and as I reflected on the list, I realized how this list could apply in so many ways in our lives.

1.  Self Awareness

For me, self awareness is crucial.  This is what helps me stay focused on my “why”.  If I don’t take the time to reflect on my purpose and vision and keep aligned with these I start losing focus on why I do what I do.

2.  Presence

Have you ever found yourself in a conversation and you are thinking about anything except what the other person is saying?  Being present is a way of showing respect and making the other person feel important.

3.  Listening

Hearing and listening are two completely different things.  When we truly listen, we are able to not only comprehend what is being said, but also hear was is not being said.  Sometimes the things that are not said aloud are more important than what is.

4.  Curiosity

I love this one.  One of the things that John Maxwell does every day is ask questions.  Why?  Because he wants to know the answers.  You don’t know what you don’t know, so you might want to find out what it is that you don’t know.

5.  Effective Questioning

As a coach, I am of the belief that we already have the answers within us, we simply are not asking the right questions.  Effective questioning is the best way I know of to get effective answers.  What kind of questions are you asking?

6.  Intuition

Many people think of intuition as a “gut feeling.”  I won’t necessarily disagree with that, but I would take it one step further.  Intuition is a gut feeling based on previous experience and the resulting outcomes.

So here is a great list for you to think about.  So the effective question becomes “What will you do with it?”

How can you apply one or more of these to improve your life or better yet, the life of someone else?
